You’ve likely enjoyed the beauty of these trees on a drive past Manchester Elementary School or on a stroll through Warvel Park. These trees are among the thousands that have been planted over the decades throughout North Manchester, and they were made possible by the Dr. Worth M. Walrod Memorial Tree Fund.
Dr. Walrod and his wife Janice, were prominent civic leaders in North Manchester who cared deeply for their community. They were supporters of the arts and placemaking, and they understood the importance of creating a community that people were proud to call home. Following the death of Dr. Walrod, Janice wanted a way to honor him and continue the values they shared. So, in September 1981, she established an endowment at the Community Foundation in his memory. This fund would be the Community Foundation’s first endowment.
Today, 45 years later, the Dr. Worth M. Walrod Tree Fund continues to provide for the beautification of the Town of North Manchester through the planting and replacement of trees within the Town’s limits. Every year, North Manchester residents have the opportunity to apply for a tree through the Town Clerk’s Office, and applications are reviewed by the North Manchester Tree Advisory Commission. While trees are not free of charge to recipients, the fund covers most of the tree and installation cost.
