2026 Wabash County Museum

The Community Foundation of Wabash County is proud to announce the Wabash County Museum as the recipient of the 2026 Nonprofit of the Year Award, recognizing its outstanding commitment to preserving and presenting local history while strengthening community connection and engagement.

While operating with a small full-time staff, the Museum has significantly expanded its impact through innovative strategies and community partnerships. A robust internship program has played a key role in this growth, engaging high school and college students year-round. These interns contribute to collection preservation, facility improvements, and community programming, while gaining valuable hands-on experience that invests in the next generation of leaders.

In recent years, the Museum has extended its reach beyond Wabash County, now serving residents across four surrounding counties. This broader engagement reflects its growing reputation as a regional cultural and educational resource, while also shining a spotlight on Wabash County’s unique heritage.

The organization has also made meaningful investments in its facilities and exhibits. A recently completed fundraising campaign will support the addition of a new interactive timeline exhibit, the first major exhibit expansion in decades. Additionally, the restoration of a 1920s caboose is nearing completion, creating a distinctive outdoor experience that expands the Museum’s footprint and enhances visitor engagement.

Despite challenges related to staffing capacity and fundraising, the Museum has remained resilient and focused on its mission. By pursuing strategic, project-based fundraising efforts and strengthening partnerships with schools, libraries, and community organizations, the Museum has steadily expanded access to its programs and resources. The Museum now serves over 20,000 visitors per year.

“This designation is so meaningful for the Wabash County Museum and a testament to the thoughtful, strategic growth the organization has pursued in recent years,” says Rachel Castle, Board Chair. “Teresa, her team, and our board have remained focused on our mission to preserve our history, educate the next generation, and innovate engaging experiences for everyone who steps through the doors of the museum. I’m proud of how far we have come and am so excited for what lies ahead as we continue to evolve to more effectively serve our region.”

The Museum’s commitment to accessibility and innovation is evident in its programming. Through grant funding and partnerships, it has introduced inclusive initiatives such as sensory-friendly story hours, ensuring individuals of all abilities can engage with local history. In 2025, the Museum, with the help of Bill Barrows, launched the Wabash County Sports Hall of Fame, celebrating local athletes spanning several decades and fostering intergenerational connection.

The organization has also embraced digital innovation to expand its reach. In 2026, the Museum began producing content through its YouTube platform, including the Talking Sports podcast, livestreams of the Thursday Parlay speaker series, and the digital release of oral histories. These efforts connect current and former residents to Wabash County’s stories, strengthening community ties beyond geographic boundaries.

In addition to its exhibits and educational initiatives, the Museum hosts a variety of free, community-centered events including its Fourth of July celebrations and food truck gatherings to interactive programs like mini golf, which create welcoming spaces for residents to connect and engage.

The Community Foundation congratulates the Wabash County Museum on this well-deserved recognition and thanks its staff, volunteers, and supporters for their continued dedication to enriching the community.
